In 2003, Jerry and Megan were devastated by a house fire that destroyed everything they owned.  9 years later, after rebuilding their lives in a new home, Megan had neck surgery. Unable to work while she recovered, the couple fell behind on their mortgage payments. Megan begged their lender to allow partial payments, but despite her pleading explanations, the company refused to offer any alternative to an immediate and full repayment - a demand that was simply impossible for Jerry and Megan to fulfill. The couple heard about the assistance available at Consumer Credit Counseling Service, so they decided to make an appointment.

At CCCS the couple met with Tina Williams, HUD Housing Counselor, who helped them file a request for a loan modification.  Tina guided Jerry and Megan through all the complications of the modification process, assisting with documentation and communications with the lender.  After several months Jerry and Megan learned that their request had been denied.  During that time, however, certain changes to housing legislation gave the couple hope that they might receive better results if they applied again.  So for the second time Tina and the couple worked for months to satisfy all the lender's documentation requests.  Once again, the request was denied. 

Afraid that they would lose their home to foreclosure, Jerry and Megan filed for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy.  Due to a discrepancy in the filing, however, their home was never considered a protected asset.  Foreclosure was still looming in the couple's future!  Unwilling to give up hope, Jerry and Megan insisted on applying for another loan modification.  With Tina's help, they gave it another shot, resubmitting all the paperwork and waiting anxiously for a verdict. Finally they received the news they had waited for - their application had been approved! Their monthly mortgage payment had been reduced from $1,482.00 to $1,042.00, a savings of $440.00!

When work became slow, Alec and Mallory* weren't sure how they could continue to pay all their creditors.  With a smaller income and an overwhelming amount of credit card debt, they knew they needed help from a third party.  Mallory called a few debt settlement companies, but was told that she should start diverting her credit card payment to them while they were negotiating with her creditors.  Knowing it would be foolhardy to stop making payments on her debt, Mallory reached out to a different type of organization, a non-profit called Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

At CCCS, the couple began working with a Certified Consumer Credit Counselor who helped them evaluate their situation and the various options that would offer a solution.  Alec and Mallory chose to enroll in CCCS' Debt Management Plan (DMP), a program in which their credit counselor would act as a mediator, helping to get interest rates and minimum payments lowered.  Instead of having to keep up with the various due dates and payments for each of their 5 different creditors, Alec and Mallory would make only one payment each month, which CCCS would then disburse on their behalf to each creditor.  Unlike the debt settlement companies with whom Mallory had spoken, each creditor would receive the correct payment amount on time every month without delay.  On the DMP, the couple would pay off all 5 credit cards with a total balance of over $30,000 in only 5 years. 

Mallory remarked, "Because of the DMP, we're a lot less stressed.  We don't have to worry about making payments each month because it's automatically deducted from our checking account.  I'd tell anyone, 'If you see you are in debt and can't make payments, this is the way to go.'  We've had a good experience with CCCS and I'd recommend the organization to anybody."

In July, Alec and Mallory will make their final payment, paying off a total of $41, 383 since beginning the DMP in April of 2009.  Because of their dedication and perseverance, they will be completing the program 9 months early, gaining independence from their credit card debt in only 4 years and 3 months.

With $20,000 of credit card debt, Samantha* needed help.  Overwhelmed by her 5 credit cards, she needed assistance from an agency that wouldn't charge her outrageous fees, then leave her worse off than she started.  In April of 2009 Samantha made the choice to reach out to CCCS, a local non-profit organization endorsed by the NFCC and the United Way.  Her counselor, Dan Stevens, recommended the Debt Management Plan, a program that would allow Samantha to reduce her interest rates and minimum payments so that she could pay off her debt within 5 years.  Samantha started the program and only 4 years later she paid off her last credit card, eliminating a total of $24,844.79 of debt.

CCCS helped me get on a reasonable payment plan where I could help myself get back on my feet and gain my self-respect back.  My counselor was kind, not demeaning, and showed me what I could do to straighten my self-made mess out.  I learned a valuable lesson and feel better about myself in getting help in this serious matter."
