John* was a hard-worker, a dedicated employee busy with multiple jobs. But not long after he and Peggy married, company cutbacks and layoffs eliminated his extra positions leaving him with only one job. As their income diminished, John and Peggy's credit card balances grew. Before long, their cumulative credit card debt had climbed to over $40,000 -- a burden that they simply couldn't control on their own.
Peggy searched the internet for debt relief programs but feared becoming involved in a scam that would only deepen their debt. She soon discovered Consumer Credit Counseling Service, a non-profit, community-based organization with accreditations and memberships in the Better Business Bureau, the United Way, and other reputable agencies. Peggy called and set up a free, no-obligation appointment.
They met with Dan Stevens, a Certified Consumer Credit Counselor with 9 years of experience. Looking back on his relationship with John and Peggy, Stevens noted, "When they first came into my office, it was clear that they were overwhelmed and unsure of how to get out from under their debt. We talked about the options that were available to them, and they decided to pursue a Debt Management Plan (DMP). On the DMP, we were able to cut their interest rates in half. John and Peggy were so relieved to see the progress that they were making towards becoming debt-free."
Today, John and Peggy have reduced their debt from $40,175 to $1,230. By the end of 2012, they will have completely paid off their credit card debt. When asked about her experience with Consumer Credit Counseling Service and the DMP, Peggy said "I just think it's wonderful. I'd recommend it to anyone!"
