Andrew* and his wife, Paige, realized they had to do something about their credit card debt. With a total balance of $91,130 on seven different credit cards, they knew they needed a plan that would eliminate their debt quickly and efficiently. They had always known of Consumer Credit Counseling Service and were aware of the reliability of the assistance provided, so they called and scheduled an appointment.
They met with Dan Stevens, certified credit counselor with 9 years of experience. Dan told them more about the Debt Management Plan (DMP), a program that would allow Andrew and Paige to pay off their full balance within 5 years. In cooperation with their creditors, Dan would help to get their interest rates and minimum payments reduced. Instead of having to keep up with seven different due dates each month for each creditor, Andrew and Paige would make one lump sum payment to CCCS, which would then be disbursed to each creditor.
In describing his first appointment at CCCS, Andrew remarked that his counselor, Dan Stevens, "was a gentleman; very kind, very non-judgmental, not the least bit critical, seemed to have nothing but my best interest in mind." Andrew professed that he felt like a burden had been lifted as soon as he and his wife began the DMP. "I felt relieved that we finally did something concrete to get ourselves out of the mess we had ourselves into, that we had made a commitment to change." He knew that their inability to delay gratification had gotten them into debt, but the DMP allowed them to make a fresh start.
If they had paid only the minimum payments on their credit cards, it would have taken decades to pay off their total balance. But after starting the DMP in March of 2009, Andrew and Paige paid off a total of $104,353 by December 2012, remaining on the plan for only 3 years and 9 months!
To those who find themselves in a situation, Andrew says the key to successfully overcoming a seemingly insurmountable task is dedication and determination. "You've got to want it bad enough. You can't just want it, you can't just want it bad - you have to want it bad enough."
Andrew and Paige, we're so glad that the DMP worked for you, and so proud that we could assist you on the road to being debt-free!
